New policy recognizes work experience, certifications, and military training for college credit
Glen Oaks Community College is already seeing positive results from its expanded Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program. The program allows students to earn college credit for knowledge gained outside the traditional classroom.
The updated policy was implemented in 2023. It recognizes prior learning from work experience, military training, professional certifications, and national college-level examinations.
The initiative supports Glen Oaks’ commitment to increasing access to education and helping students complete their degrees more efficiently.
“Many students bring valuable experience with them when they begin college,” said Dr. Adam L. Cloutier, vice president of academics. “Recognizing that prior learning helps students move forward with confidence while continuing their academic and professional journeys.”
Multiple pathways to earn credit
Students at Glen Oaks can now receive credit through several pathways.
Experience-Based Credit
Students with significant professional, military, or advanced learning experience may work with faculty members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.
Faculty evaluate the experience and determine whether it aligns with specific Glen Oaks courses. When appropriate, college credit is awarded.
Industry Certifications and Military Training
Glen Oaks recognizes a variety of industry certifications and technical credentials. Examples include:
- CompTIA A+
- CompTIA Network+
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- CompTIA Security+
- Microsoft Office Specialist certifications
Students who have completed military training may also receive credit through their Joint Services Transcript (JST).
College-Level Examinations
In addition to Advanced Placement (AP) and CLEP exams, Glen Oaks now accepts several additional examination programs, including:
- DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Cambridge Assessment examinations
The college also offers in-house examinations that allow students to demonstrate knowledge in specific subject areas.
Supporting student success
College leaders say the expanded policy helps remove barriers and supports students who have gained valuable skills outside the classroom.
“Many students don’t realize how much college-level learning they’ve already completed,” said Dr. Bryan Newton, president of Glen Oaks Community College. “Credit for Prior Learning is another way we are helping students stay on track toward a degree or certificate.”
The program also supports Glen Oaks’ broader commitment to expanding access for adult learners and recognizing diverse learning pathways. These efforts align with the college’s strategic priorities to increase enrollment opportunities and improve student success outcomes.
