Academic Advising at Glen Oaks
Your Partner in Success
At Glen Oaks Community College, you’re never alone in planning your path. Every new student is matched with a professional academic adviser who works one-on-one with you to set goals, build a clear academic plan, and make sure you stay on track toward graduation, transfer, or career success.
Our advisers provide personalized guidance to help you:
- Select courses that fit your program and schedule
- Understand degree and certificate requirements
- Explore transfer pathways to four-year colleges and universities
- Receive career counseling and guidance for next steps after GOCC
- Balance responsibilities in and outside of school
- Connect with campus and community resources for additional support
Why Advising Matters
Academic advising is more than choosing classes—it’s about creating a road map for your future. Whether you’re a recent high school graduate, adult learner, or transfer-bound student, advisers help you make informed choices that align with your personal, academic, and career goals.
You'll benefit from personalized advising in:
- Academic planning and goal setting
- Adding or dropping classes
- Registration support
- Career exploration and counseling
- Referrals to tutoring, counseling, veteran services, and more
Placement & Course Planning
New students are required to take the Accuplacer placement test or submit qualifying ACT or SAT scores. Advisers will review your results with you to recommend the best starting courses for your success.
Specialized Advising
Some student groups receive tailored advising and support, including:
- Dual-enrolled and early middle college students
- International students
- Students with disabilities
- Veterans and military-connected students
- Special populations requiring additional services
Academic Resources
Curriculum guides for all degrees and certificates are available in the Student Services Office and online. While helpful, these guides are not a substitute for working directly with an adviser who can help interpret requirements and map them to your goals.

Tools for Students
Advisers use digital tools like the Watermark Student App to help you stay organized and connected. Once you’ve met with your adviser, you’ll receive instructions on using the app to manage appointments, track academic plans, and receive important reminders.
