What You Need to Know When Your Student Takes College Courses at Glen Oaks
As a parent or guardian of a Dual Enrolled student, you play an important role in supporting your student’s success. Participating in the Glen Oaks Dual Enrollment program allows high school students to begin their official college journey—with all the opportunities and responsibilities that come with it.
Please review the information below so you understand what Dual Enrollment means for your student—and for you.
The statements below pertain to the responsibilities and guidelines of my child when taking advantage of this program.
Understanding Your Student’s Responsibilities
By participating in Dual Enrollment at Glen Oaks:
-
Your student is building their official college transcript.
All grades earned through Dual Enrollment become part of their permanent academic record at Glen Oaks Community College. -
Your student is responsible for course selection.
If your student plans to transfer credits after high school, they should check with potential colleges to confirm which courses will transfer. Most Michigan institutions accept Glen Oaks credits, but transferability depends on the program and the receiving school. Students need a 2.0 GPA or higher for credits to transfer. -
Your student may be responsible for tuition or fees.
If the school district does not cover all course costs—or if your student fails or drops a class after the refund period—they may be required to repay the school district or cover the remaining balance. -
Your student must follow college policies and deadlines.
Glen Oaks operates on a different academic calendar than most high schools. Students are expected to know their start dates, class times, locations (in-person or online), and transportation arrangements. They must follow the college schedule for each class. -
Your student may be exposed to adult-level course material.
College courses are designed for adult learners and may include topics or discussions that reflect college-level content and maturity.
Your Access to Student Records
Due to federal law (FERPA), Glen Oaks cannot release your student’s grades, schedule, or academic progress to you—unless your student signs a FERPA release form. This form is available through the college and must be completed by the student.
For more on FERPA and privacy rights, visit FERPA Guidelines.
Your Student’s Tools & Communication
All Dual Enrollment students are issued:
- A Glen Oaks student ID number
- A GOCC email address
- Access to the Watermark, where they can:
- View their class schedule
- Check grades
- Receive college communications
- Update personal information
Course Changes & Support
-
If your student wants to add or drop a course, they must discuss it with their high school counselor. A Change of Schedule Form must be completed in Etrieve.
-
Your student is expected to seek help if they need it. Glen Oaks provides free tutoring, free mentoring, online support and a Dual Enrollment Coordinator to help your student succeed.
Information Sharing Between Schools
By participating in Dual Enrollment, your student consents to:
- Glen Oaks receiving necessary educational records from their high school
- The sharing of college attendance, grades, and academic progress with the high school
This helps ensure your student receives the support they need from both institutions.
