Supporting Your Education While You’re Pregnant or Parenting

Glen Oaks Community College is committed to creating a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive learning environment for students who are pregnant, recovering from pregnancy, or parenting while enrolled. You have the right to continue your education without discrimination, pressure, or unnecessary barriers.

This page explains your rights under federal law, outlines available academic and campus accommodations, and shows you how to request support so you can stay on track toward your educational goals.

Your Rights Under Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs that receive federal financial assistance.

Under Title IX, discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery from any of these conditions is not allowed.

Academic and Campus Accommodations

You may request reasonable accommodations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions to ensure equal access to classes, programs, and campus activities.

Pregnancy and related conditions are treated the same as any other temporary medical condition or disability under College policy.

Examples of common accommodations include:

  • Alternative classroom seating or a larger desk
  • Elevator or accessible route access
  • Breaks or flexibility for restroom use
  • Temporary adjustments to attendance or participation requirements

Accommodations are individualized and based on your specific needs.

Leaves of Absence and Return to Class

Students may take a leave of absence for pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery for as long as a healthcare provider determines it is medically necessary.

After an approved leave, you have the right to return to the same academic status you held before the leave began, including the same program, standing, and opportunities.

Lactation Space on Campus

Glen Oaks Community College provides a designated lactation space to support breastfeeding and pumping needs.

The lactation space is located just inside the entrance to the upper-level F Wing and includes:

  • Sink and mirror
  • Microwave and small refrigerator
  • Seating and table
  • Electrical outlet
  • Lockable door for privacy

Please note that the College is not responsible for the security or integrity of stored breast milk.
