Safe. Secure. Student-Focused.

Glen Oaks Community College is committed to providing a secure, respectful living environment for every student in The Oaks student housing. From emergency systems to ID access control, we prioritize safety—so you can focus on your education, not your belongings.

Emergency Systems and Surveillance

  • Security cameras are installed throughout student housing and key campus locations.

  • Emergency call stations are located in every campus building and in the main parking lot.

  • Campus safety officers are available to respond during key hours. For after-hours emergencies, dial 911 and then contact Glen Oaks security from a campus phone.

Keys, Card Access & Lock Safety

  • Each resident is issued a key (swipe) card that provides access to their building, suite, and room.
  • Key cards must remain with the assigned student at all times. They are not transferable.
  • Cards must be presented to housing or college staff upon request.
  • Lost, stolen, or damaged cards must be reported immediately to the Housing Office.
  • Replacement cards cost $15, billed to your student account.

Students found using or possessing someone else’s ID or key card—or lending theirs—will face judicial sanctions in accordance with housing policy.

Tip: Keep your card secure. Don’t loan it, and never prop open doors.

Fire Alarms & Evacuation Protocols

If a fire alarm sounds:

  • Leave the building immediately. Do not use elevators.
  • Head to the west parking lot and stay there until an official “all-clear” is given by staff.
  • Do not re-enter the building before permission is given.
  • False alarms or tampering with fire systems may result in removal from housing and possible state-level fines or criminal charges.

Reminder: Pull the alarm if you see fire while exiting.

Doors, Theft Prevention & Liability

Glen Oaks installs multiple safety measures, but students are responsible for protecting their own property:

  • Lock your suite and bedroom doors, even if stepping away for a few minutes.
  • Never leave doors propped open.
  • Keep valuables in a personal safe or lockbox.
  • The College is not responsible for stolen or damaged property.

We strongly recommend that all residents carry renter’s insurance. Many family homeowners’ policies include this coverage—check with your provider.

Lost or Misused Key Cards

  • If your card is damaged, lost, or stolen, report it immediately.
  • Unauthorized use may result in financial liability and disciplinary action.
  • If a key card is found in possession of someone other than the rightful owner, both parties will face sanctions.

Replacement Fee: $15 (charged to your account)

Resident Responsibility at The Oaks

As a member of the Glen Oaks housing community, you are expected to:

  • Carry your key card at all times
  • Report safety issues immediately
  • Follow evacuation instructions
  • Respect the housing handbook policies
  • Safeguard your belongings
