Trustee Profile

Rick Cordes serves as a trustee for Glen Oaks Community College, bringing a lifelong commitment to education, public advocacy, and community service. His connection to Glen Oaks dates back to the College’s earliest days, when he attended classes during its inaugural session—an experience that shaped a career devoted to supporting local education and opportunity.

His service reflects a deep belief in community colleges as accessible, student-centered institutions that strengthen the region.


Professional and Community Background

A graduate of Mendon Community Schools, Rick earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan School of Journalism and later completed a master’s degree in education at Western Michigan University.

Rick’s professional career included service as a teacher and principal with Colon Community Schools, where he supported student learning and school leadership. He also contributed to regional storytelling as a longtime writer for the Three Rivers Commercial-News, highlighting issues and events of importance to the community.


Service to Glen Oaks

Rick’s support for Glen Oaks extends beyond Board service. A strong advocate for the College’s mission and future, he chaired two millage campaign committees that helped secure resources to keep the College accessible, affordable, and responsive to student and community needs while promoting Glen Oaks as a valuable educational resource for students and the greater community.

As a trustee, Rick supports governance, policy oversight, and long-term planning grounded in educational access and institutional sustainability.


Community Leadership and Engagement

Rick has been actively involved with numerous local organizations, including Three Rivers Health, the Beacon Three Rivers Health Auxiliary, the Three Rivers Downtown Development Authority, and Camp Wakeshma. His civic engagement reflects a long-standing commitment to community wellbeing, education, and service.


Personal Background

Rick and his wife, Laurel, live on Fishers Lake in Three Rivers. They enjoy water activities and traveling to visit family across the country. Together, they have six grown children and 13 grandchildren, along with a much-loved household of pets that includes five cats and seven dogs.


Governance Role

Trustees serve in a governance and policy-making capacity and are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the college. Operational leadership is provided by the President and executive leadership team.
