Use Your Financial Aid to Get the Books and Tech You Need

At Glen Oaks Community College, we want to make sure you're ready on day one. If you’ve been awarded financial aid, you may be eligible to receive a Book Advance—a way to use your anticipated aid to buy textbooks, education-related technology, and required supplies before your aid is disbursed. It’s not extra money or a loan—it’s simply early access to part of your aid.

What is the Virtual Bookstore Advance?

Glen Oaks partners with Follett, our official virtual bookstore provider, to make accessing course materials easier. Once your financial aid is in place and you meet the eligibility criteria, your Virtual Bookstore Advance is automatically applied—you don’t need to sign up.

You can use your advance at the GOCC bookstore within 1–2 business days of meeting eligibility.

Book Advance Eligibility Checklist

To qualify for a Book Advance, you must:

  • Have financial aid awarded (grants, scholarships, or loans) for the term
  • Have a final class schedule (changes may affect your eligibility)
  • Be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • Have a remaining aid balance after tuition and fees are covered

Tip: Log in to your MyGOCC Portal to check your financial aid status and credit balance in Student Finance.

Best Practices for Using a Book Advance

  • Check your MyGOCC portal and email often to stay updated on your aid and requirements
  • Don’t overspend—you’re responsible for any amount over your aid balance
  • Talk to Financial Aid before buying books if you’ve made changes to your schedule

Important Notes

If your eligibility changes—for example, if you drop a class or register for a course outside your program—you may be required to repay part or all of the Book Advance. Make sure your courses apply to your program of study and that your schedule is finalized before making purchases.
