Support for Parents: Student Housing at Glen Oaks

Empowering your student to thrive—on campus and beyond.

At Glen Oaks Community College, we understand that sending your student to college is a major milestone—not just for them, but for you as a parent or guardian. Our on-campus student housing offers more than just a place to live. It’s a vibrant, supportive community designed to help your student succeed academically, socially, and personally.

A Safe, Comfortable Place to Learn and Grow

Glen Oaks student housing combines modern amenities with a welcoming environment. Every room includes the essentials for comfortable living—plus access to communal spaces that foster friendships and personal growth.

But housing at GOCC goes beyond the walls. We intentionally bring the college experience into the residence hall through programs that connect classroom learning with everyday life. Your student will live in a space designed to promote both academic achievement and a strong sense of community.

Our Promise: We’re committed to making our residence hall a safe, inclusive, and inspiring home for your student.

Guidance for Parents and Families

College is a time of transition—and not just for students. As your child becomes more independent, you may be navigating new emotions and expectations. Many parents find it helpful to prepare for this change by learning more about the college experience.

Here are a few trusted books recommended by fellow parents:

  • The Parents’ Survival Guide to Freshman Year of College – Borden, Burlinson & Kearns
  • Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years – Coburn & Treeger
  • When Your Kid Goes to College – Barkin
  • Don’t Tell Me What to Do, Just Send Money – Johnson & Schelhas-Miller
  • You’re On Your Own (But I’m Here if You Need Me) – Savage
  • Success and Sanity on the College Campus – Trevouledes & Grieger
  • The iConnected Parent – Hoffer & Moore

These resources offer practical advice and reassurance as you support your student from a distance.

Understanding Privacy: What Parents Can (and Can’t) Access

We value our partnership with parents—but we also honor student privacy. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), certain information about your student may not be shared without their written consent.

What can be shared:

  • Student name, phone number, and email (shared with roommates)
  • First names used on door décor or bulletin boards
  • Student names listed for awards, leadership, or public recognition

What can’t be shared without consent:

  • Roommate conflicts or concerns
  • Disciplinary matters
  • Student conduct information

If your student wants you involved in these conversations, they can provide written consent directly to the Housing Office.

Important: In an emergency or serious concern about your student’s well-being, GOCC staff will contact you immediately using the provided emergency contact information.

Encouraging Student Independence

Should your student experience a challenge—such as a roommate issue or personal concern—please encourage them to speak directly with the Housing Office. Our team is here to help, and we work best when we communicate with students directly.
